You should be able to do this by appropriately editing 
/etc/urlview/system.urlview to invoke the desired browser.

It assumes urlview is configured in your ~/.muttrc (or equivalent) 
configuration file. If you're running a terminal in a desktop session, 
the browser should open in another window, which should then receive focus.

I haven't tried this myself yet, but I'm not aware of any reason why it 
wouldn't work.
