No. You can even install Orca (a screen reader for Gnome) and gain access to
the Gnome desktop as well.

Also, you could configure the machine not to run X by default, so that it
boots to a textual login prompt. For those users who wish to run Gnome
whenever they log in, just put a startx command in each such user's
~/.bash_profile file. That way, as soon as the user logs in, X will load and
start the Gnome desktop.

In your own home directory, you can create a configuration file so that when
you run X (manually from the shell, as you plan to work primarily in text
mode) it will load Orca and then start Gnome.
