[BRLTTY] Only question mark characters when running brltty in ppc ubuntu and ppc debian etch

Did you use the  -t option?
(Don't you need to set the braille code)?
so it should be either:
from a terminal
as root
brltty -b braille_display -d /dev/port -t en_us
Or in the debian installer:
install brltty =what_display, port, en_us
