Just to risk an analogy with X: the X11 protocol has a way for clients
to ask the server to draw text for them.  This is used by simple clients
like xedit, xfig or brltty's XWindow driver.  But nowadays people want
fancy features like anti-alias, i18n, etc. which wasn't expected when
designing X11.  Instead of extending X11, developpers preferred to write
a library (libfreetype for instance) that performs the font
rasterization on the client side, and then send raw pixmaps to the
server.

FWIW, I'll be off for a few days, then be at FOSDEM, then off again, and
back on March, 1st.
