Maybe a silly question, but do you start up your display with the script
in /etc/init.d called brltty?
If so, there could be a line near the beginning that read like:
exit 0
(cannot remember the exact writing). But if this line is there, you
shoult write a "#" before that line, in order to make your script work.
I remember having had such a problem with an early Ubuntu version.
