I installed Rosetta and screen-4.0.1 worked. I imagine that since I
haven't been able to compile this version of screen on my Intel mac mini,
the one I had compiled and was trying to use was compiled on a powerpc
machine when I had one, though I still haven't figured out why it ran fine
in Leopard unless Rosetta was installed automatically in Leopard but not
in Snow Leopard. It's working fine now; keyboard emulation doesn't work
but I can't remember whether it ever worked or not. I still have to run
the configure with disable-api. I've upgraded all outdated packages on
Macports but haven't tested to see whether or not I still have to put the
/opt paths at the end in order to get brltty to install. I'll probably
have Dave look at my system eventually to see whether we can solve the
issues but at least I can use it now. I can even start up screen as a
login item on my Mac though I still have to manually start brltty.
Apple does support quite a few braille displays now on the Mac, though I
don't know for sure how well it does in terminal. Unfortunately Apple's
braille program doesn't support usb-serial devices though it does support
usb and also bluetooth. But having brltty work in terminal makes it
possible for me to do a lot of command-line tasks and programs right on
the Mac instead of always having to go to a linux machine. I'm typing this
email in Pine in Terminal and using both voiceover and brltty.
