It looks to me like you might be encountering a problem which I'm indeed aware 
of. If so, it's USB-specific so I expect your serial test to be successful.

The last time I tested a Braille Sense with USB on Linux, a temrporary problem 
within the device was caused when Linux closed the device. In other words, the 
device worked the first time, but not the second time. 
Disconnecting/reconnecting the USB cable cleared the problem, but, of course, 
only for one more use, after which the problem had to be cleared again. Could 
you please test to see if this is the case for you?
