The patch worked, thanks!

I actually figured out why it was not building :)  I had somehow neglected 
to configure on the directory above...




I also just discovered the problem with those ENV args.  The correct 
sequence is:




> export GTK_IM_MODULE='xim'
> export QT_IM_MODULE='xim'





apparently this is enough even for firefox ;)





I will look into reporting the bug in gnome-terminal

Yes. Unfortunately, applications like reinventing everything instead of
using the standard input methods.
