I finally got it sorted out. You were on the right track, Dave. apt-get remove left the configuration files in place. apt-get purge wiped out everything, and a new apt-get install fixed it. We have braille. now I am scared to mess with 5.6. 5.3.1 is the latest ubuntu has.
