You need to switch to 6-dot braille in order to activate the contraction table.
There are two times when the contraction talbe isn't used. The first is when
brltty is in 8-dot braille mode. The second is that the (space-delimtied) word
on which the cursor is isn't contracted.

>also how do I make the cursor always down.

Do you mean that you don't want to see the cursor at all?

If you'd like me to tell you which exact keys do some function or other then
you'll need to tell me what size of Navigator you have. The key bindings on the
80 are different from those on the 20/40. You can actually look them up
yourself by going into the BrailleDrivers/TSI directory of brltty's source
tree. The file help0.txt tells you what the bindings are for the 20.40, and the
file help1.txt tells you what the bindings are for the 80.

>is there a way to make brailletty follow speakup?

No. They're two completely separate applications.
