Moreover, Speakup or Yasr would be a much better choice for basic speech
access to the console.

Adding a means of intercepting keyboard scan codes would be useful,
however, as it would allow a braille keyboard mode to be provided without
requiring a braille display that supports it directly, such as the Inka or
one of the displays with an in-built braille keyboard. Under Linux I
expect this would involve kernel-level work however. Also, not all
keyboards give reliable reports when multiple keys have been pressed, or
so I am told.
