I myself have never used gentoo, so I hope there's a gentoo user reading this 
thread who can answer your question. Is it possible for you to just plug your 
speakers into the other soundcard?

The /tmp directory is always writable by any user. Even if you're using a CD, 
/tmp will still be writable. The most likely case is that this is done by 
mounting it to a RAM-resident disk.
