[BRLTTY] easy bar on el 40s reacting slowly

Hi,
I have the standard debian stable package of brltty installed. In worked out of the box with Papenmeier BrailleX el40s. Great! Only trouble:
the easy bar of the display takes about 2 seconds before showing the next 40 characters after being moved.
Is this a known bug of the debian package and should I 
1. recompile the package or 
2. run it on a native linux system. (At the moment I have only a virtual (vmware 5) debian linux under windows. Processor speed shouldn't be an issue though.
I can suply kernel messages and config files but I didn't change anything there. I am getting kernel messages about unknown keys e072 or e071 being pressed or released but this doesn't correspond with key being pressed on the braille display.
