Certain parts of BRLTTY work better when iconv is available, but that's not 
your particular problem.

Only ISO-8859-1 is supported that way right now. This should, of course, be 
fixed.

The best way to fix it would be to support screen in Unicode mode. That means 
using its -U option. Do you know if that works on FreeBSD?

The other way to fix it would indeed involve using iconv. Simply using UTF-8 
would be the best, though.
